HOt Rolled Steel (HRS)

This high temperature processed type of steel, provided, like all the other materials, by our contractor Metek Plc, made to withstand the knock or bumps which a building may take in a heavy-duty environment is more than ideal for student accommodations and hotels we usually build.

1.Setting Out
Before commencing the project and subsequently, every level the main contractor's engineer sets out the control points and datum from where we draw the grid-lines as control lines for mapping the position of all elements on the slab.

2.Validating Position
Next step is validating position for the HRS columns certified by installing the holding down fixings into the slab in their marked position.

3.Assembling
Following the sequence of HRS erection, the HRS components are individually crane lifted and starts assembling the columns in their pre-set position making sure the bolts are tightened and sprayed as checked. The assembly elements are then lifted and held by crane until they are safely secured with holding down bolts into their set down position.

4.Set Line & Level
During column installation and once the above is completed HRS is set in line/level checking stability of the entire structure before moving to the next operation..

light gauge steel frames (lgsf)

This operation is very similar to wood framed construction where the wooden framing members are replaced with thin galvanised steel elements called cold formed sections, as the shape is given at room temperature. Like in wooden framed construction, in the factory the steel members (stud and track) are first screwed together to make up the frames which are then delivered to site in bundles ready for joining.

1.Handling
Lifted by crane assisted by the slinger the sections are loaded to the slab/floor in bundles from where each frame is manually handled by operatives to be carried to the position where they are going to be erected.

2.Positioning
Starting always from the corner the frame panels are placed in the drawn position and temporary fixed at the base and then propped to secure them into vertical position. The adjacent frames follow the same procedure each frame being temporary propped for vertical stability and stitched together in a sequence that maximises the solidity of the walls as formed.

3.Final Adjustments
Finally when the level/area walls are in place commence the adjustment of height, level, plum and gridline position of each frame and wall. The operatives ensure that every vertical stud has the correct amount of packing and all fixings are in place in the right number.

4.Walls & Partitions
Once the frames are fully installed they formed the level partitions and so-called the load bearing walls for the next level up.

steel floor decking

Metal decking becomes a preferred method of floor construction for multi-storey structural steel framed buildings as it offers a versatile and cost-effective composite steel flooring solution proven popular because it combines efficiency with speed of construction and an economic approach for a wide range of building types.

1.Edge Support
To limit the open edges usually the decking installation commences from building/phase corner with fitting first the headtrack and edgetrim as side support channels for the deck sheets to be fixed to. These support elements are trimmed to size where needed, screwed together as double track for middle walls and then fixed on top of the frames sections with self taping screws.

2.Laying & Fixing
By the installation drawing and working sequence the deck sheets bundles are placed on the working floor in closest proximity to their fitting area. Using mobile towers operatives will manually lift each deck sheet into the headtrack of the frame laying them and stitch them together with few screws. Once the sheets are in place, decking can be use as working platform to fix all the remaining screws.

3.Propping
Composite slabs using steel decking are considerable stiffer and stronger than many other flooring systems, nevertheless by the time concrete is cured where the room lengths span exceeds a certain value decking needs underneath temporary propping support using across, timber, studs and fixings.

reinforcement

It is hard for plain concrete to withstand tensile stresses caused by vibrations of all kind of forces at play in a building make it unsuitable in most structural applications. Therefore the reinforcing steel like rebar and mesh is used to absorbs the tensile, shear, and sometimes the compressive stresses in a concrete structure. The tensile strength of steel and the compressive strength of concrete work together allowing to sustain these stresses over considerable spans.

1.Rebar
Loaded on decking platform in different thickness and lengths the rebar is then trimmed to size where needed and laid in the required number and size according the drawings provided. To avoid rebar displacement during concreting and to ensure proper concrete cover blocks and bars of plastic spacers are used.

2.Mesh
Like the rebars, mesh comes in varying sizes and thicknesses made up of wires melded together into a flat sheet to form a square, grid-like pattern. Loaded by crane the mesh is spread and laid manually by operatives then trimmed to fit.

3.Tying
The reinforcement members are tied together either by hand or tying guns using soft galvanized PVC coating steel wire offering excellent flexibility and corrosion resistance. We tie the rebar together so that it does not shift or move during concrete pour, plus to achieve a correct spacing of reinforcing elements and to allow a slab-rebar flexibility, for them to move independently to some extent without causing stress fractures in the finished product.

Casting Concrete

A poorly laid concrete floor is not only difficult to rectify later, but it’s time consuming and it might be very expensive too. Therefore casting a concrete slab is a considerable crucial task in a construction building that requires great planing and accuracy in addition to proper execution sequence.

1.Pouring
Determined by the site circumstances the concrete is poured using 2 methods. First and preferred one is by a lorry mounted boom concrete pump with a remote-controlled articulating robotic arm using flexible hose tubes linked together to place high volumes of concrete accurately wherever needed or secondly a crane enabled concrete skip with the delivery hose attached to the gate of the skip, allowing to direct the flow of the concrete where desired.

2.Spreading aggregate
We using shovels or trowels to work the concrete into awkward places or hard-to-reach areas and corners or moving small amounts of concrete around the pour to fill voids or depressions as well as screeds to (re)move the concrete overfilled excess insuring an adequate spread of the aggregate on the entire slab area.

3.Consolidation
For the fresh concrete to shape within the forms around embedded reinforcement and to eliminate stone pockets and entrapped air, vibration is the most widely used method for compacting concrete. Using a vibrating beam screed device or by immersion poker vibrator the internal friction between the aggregate particles is temporarily cancelled the concrete behaves like a liquid making it easy to settles under the action of gravity and the air voids to rise to the surface.

4.Finishing
To bring the top slab surface to a proper grade is needed first cutting off excess concrete by screeding followed by power floating with a finishing machine to embed aggregate particles just beneath the surface, remove slight imperfections, humps and voids and compact the mortar at the surface in preparation for further finishing operations like hand floating where a smooth, hard and dense surface is desired. Additionally the fresh concrete is sprayed with chemcure to prevent too quick over-dying cracks during its cure.

Roofing

The long spanning capability and construction flexibility along with many other features allow the steel joist system to become an engineered floor/roof solution providing exceptional performance and construction efficiency that basically consists of cold formed, galvanised c-sections with connection on the top side walls channel.

1.Joists
Once framing complete the roofing members bundles are crane-loaded on the slab. First the Z-shaped track are fixed to the heads of the walls with screws along with their fitting brackets followed by joists installation, each one manually handled by at least 2 operatives at each end using suitably sized mobile towers.

2.Plywood
Structural plywood besides supporting and transferring loads to the main force resisting elements of the building, provides an excellent base for many types of finished flooring and provide a flat, solid support for roofing every sheet of plywood being fixed with screws into the underneath joists, trimmed to size to fit tight against the other ones on all sides.

3.Trussed Roof
They are designed specifically for commercial buildings requirements as a structural framework that supports many applications as structural plywood and other materials of choice. To support the roofing material the trussed rafters individually designed are factory built components, strength graded, joined together with steel nails and bracket plates. The purlins will provide intermediate support to rafters and trusses providing support to the ends of purlins as the whole structure is bolted down into the concrete roof floor.

wather boarding

It is a stable, reliable airtightness external sheathing board, faced with water repellent material for higher weather protection; strong yet easy to cut, highly moisture, mould and sound resistant and non combustible. It is a faster way to weather tight a building saving time and reducing installation cost compared to traditional sheathing board methods.

1.Trimming
Unless Cement Particle Board is used there is no need for cutting area, power tools or dust extractor as these lightweight boards can be score and snap with a Stanley knife. Therefore there is no dust or flying fragments when cutting so can ideally be trimmed on site as dimensionally stable panels in all size to fit the boarding pattern.

2.Fixing
The boards are inspected and repaired or replaced as required for any damage prior to closing off the sheathing layer like facer delamination, large degradation, significant dents, scrapes or tears, perforations holes. The boards are butted to create at last 2mm gap and fixed with self drilling screws into the behind steel studs at around 300 mm centres.

3.Sealing
Sealing methods accommodate all expected movement and satisfy the need for acoustic, fire, weather, or other performance requirements expected from the sheathing layer. Appropriate applied sealing such as butyl tape and/or Silicone are used to seal deflection or movement joints created in the board layer. Sealant is applied as boarding progresses, along the previously fixed board edge prior to installation of the next board and any gaps in sealant or fixing screw attempt holes are sealed as well.

Diamond Core drilling

Diamond core drilling is a fast, accurate and efficient method of drilling concrete, steel and glass structures. The technique is entirely safe and almost noise-free without causing any damage or vibration to the surroundings, making it a cost effective environment-friendly alternative for construction contractors.

1.Drilling
The core drilling method eleminates the chances of fractures, reducing spalling and the amount of debris and dust, creating sharp, accurate and precise openings that don’t need patches or any other repair. Instead, one can immediately start with the following installation, insertion, or operation required. Diamond core drilling machines are user-friendly as lightweight and compact in design, equally useful for dry as well as wet drilling. They can smoothly cut through reinforced concrete and rebar, enabling you to get holes of the diameters needed at the desired place.
